A study presented at the Federation of European Neuroscience Societies Forum in 2026 produced a number that is hard to ignore. Adults who spoke four languages had brains that looked, on average, about 13 years younger than the brains of same-aged people who spoke only one. Two languages was worth roughly six years. Three languages, roughly seven. The effect grew with each language added.
If you are raising a young child right now, that finding sits somewhere between encouraging and confusing. Nobody is suggesting you enrol a five year old in four language courses. But the study adds to a fast-growing body of work on what a lifetime of language experience does to a brain, and it says something quite specific about when that experience starts. Here is what the research found, what it cannot tell us, and what it reasonably means for a family with a three to six year old at home.
What did the new study actually find?
Researchers built a statistical model of typical brain activity at different ages, then used it to estimate how old each participant's brain looked. People who spoke more languages consistently came out younger than their birth certificates. The difference reached about 13 years among four-language speakers.
The work was presented by Dr Lucia Amoruso of the Basque Center on Cognition, Brain and Language, with colleagues from the Latin American Brain Health Institute in Chile, the Universidad de San Andres in Argentina and the Global Brain Health Institute at Trinity College Dublin. The team worked with people from the Basque region of Spain who spoke between one and four languages, in various combinations of Spanish, Basque, French and English. Two details matter more than the headline number. First, higher proficiency was linked to a bigger effect. Second, so was learning the second language earlier. It was not simply a question of ticking the bilingual box.
How do you even measure the age of a brain?
The researchers first scanned 728 people using magnetoencephalography, a technique that picks up the faint magnetic fields produced when brain cells fire. They trained a model to recognise what typical brain connectivity looks like at each age, creating what they call a brain aging clock. They then applied that clock to a separate group of 144 people and compared each person's estimated brain age with their real age.
This method is now common in neuroscience, and it is worth understanding its limits. A brain age estimate is a statistical resemblance, not a diagnosis. Saying a brain looks 13 years younger means its activity patterns resemble those typically seen in people 13 years younger, which is interesting but is not the same as saying that person will live or think like someone 13 years younger.
Is this a one-off result, or does other research agree?
It is not a one-off. The same research group published a much larger analysis in Nature Aging in November 2025, covering 86,149 adults aged 51 to 90 across 27 European countries. In that dataset, people who spoke only one language were roughly twice as likely to show accelerated aging, and the protective pattern got stronger with each additional language.

Having a large peer-reviewed population study and a smaller brain-imaging study pointing the same way is more convincing than either would be alone.
Does this mean bilingual children are smarter?
No, and this is the part most headlines skip. The claim that bilingualism produces a general boost in executive function has been fiercely contested for over a decade, and the evidence is genuinely mixed. Several large meta-analyses have found the average advantage on executive function tasks to be close to zero once small samples and unpublished null results are accounted for.
A meta-analysis of 170 studies concluded any advantage is highly dependent on the specific task and the age of the participants, rather than being a broad general effect. Other researchers have used the debate as a case study in psychology's replication problems, arguing the hypothesis has been repeatedly redefined to survive failed replications.
So the honest reading is this: the brain-aging evidence in older adults is looking reasonably solid and reasonably large. The claim that a bilingual four year old will outperform a monolingual four year old on reasoning tasks is not. Both things can be true.
Why would starting early make a difference?
Because the mechanism proposed by the researchers is cumulative use, not a one-time installation. Every time a multilingual person speaks, their brain has to select one language and hold the others back. That constant selection recruits attention, memory and control networks, and the theory is that decades of this build what neuroscientists call cognitive reserve.
Seen that way, an earlier start matters mainly because it buys more years of the exercise, and because early exposure tends to produce the higher proficiency that was itself linked to a larger effect. That is consistent with what is known about early phonology: young children pick up sound systems with an ease that fades later. Professor Christina Dalla of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, who chairs the FENS communication committee and was not involved in the work, put it plainly: effortful learning that activates the brain appears to help, and the earlier it starts, the better.
Is four languages realistic for a normal family?
For most families, no, and that is fine. The gradient reported in the study means every step counts. Going from one language to two was associated with the single largest jump in the earlier European dataset. The move from three to four looks dramatic on a chart, but very few households are in a position to make it.
What is realistic for a lot of families is one home language plus consistent, enjoyable exposure to a second. The obstacle is rarely motivation. It is usually volume: a second language needs regular hours of live, responsive input, and a parent who does not speak it fluently cannot supply that alone. This is exactly the gap that grandparents, childminders, playgroups, community classes and, more recently, conversational toys try to fill. What can a parent of a three to six year old do this year?
Aim for consistency over intensity, and for interaction over exposure. Passive input does very little for young children. What builds language is back-and-forth exchange: the child says something, gets a real response, and has to say something back.
- Pick one second language and stay with it. Rotating between three languages gives you three shallow exposures instead of one useful one.
- Anchor it to a daily slot. Bath time, the walk to school, the ten minutes before dinner. A fixed slot survives busy weeks.
- Prioritise talking over screens. Children learn language from responsive partners far more readily than from video.
- Let them be bad at it. Correcting every error is the fastest way to make a child stop trying.
- Find a patient conversation partner. Someone, or something, that will answer the same question ten times without sighing.

Most researchers point to roughly 20 to 30 percent of a child's waking language input as the level at which a second language becomes actively productive rather than merely understood. In practice that means daily contact, not a weekly lesson.
Can a talking toy actually help with a second language?
It can help with one specific part: repetition and responsive practice. A conversational toy will patiently answer, rephrase and repeat, which is useful for a preschooler. It cannot replace the cultural and emotional context a human speaker provides, and no serious study has yet tested toys against human partners over the long term.
